Many thanks to fellow Crooked Cat
author Kathy Sharp who asked if I'd be willing to join a 'Meet My Main
Character' blog tour, which I was delighted
to do!
This week, it's my turn…
What is the name of
your character?
Meet Zane Ferguson. He's an extreme sports instructor, expert ice climber
and a man struggling to forget the past.
Zane has just returned from Austria where he's been working as a climbing instructor. He's back in the UK to try to turn his life around but things are about to get even more complicated...

Zane Ferguson, one of the main characters in my novel If You Only Knew. |
When and where is the
story set?
Zane is one of the main characters in my latest novel If You
Only Knew. The book is set in the modern day in Derbyshire’s stunning Peak
District.
Most of the action takes place in a fictitious village
called Carleton which is loosely inspired by the real life Peak District
village of Castleton with its stone cottages cascading down the hills, amazing
scenery and lots of tourists, including those who seek adventure with activities such as climbing,
abseiling and mountain biking.
Just outside the village in the book is the Carrdale Outdoor Extreme Sports Centre
which was up for sale but now has two new owners – Zane and his fellow extreme-sports-seeking friend
and business partner Matt. The two are
keen to focus on making the centre a huge success but both men are keeping
secrets and have pasts they are each desperately
trying to forget.
What should we know
about him?
Zane is a renowned ice climber and lover of extreme sports –
he’s even trekked to the North Pole for charity! He’s fearless when it comes to
scaling cliff faces on a piece of rope but not when it comes to matters of the
heart.
He’s had enough of those kinds of complications and instead wants
to focus on making Carrdale one of the best outdoor sports centres in the UK –
that’s his goal.
He’s not looking to get involved - at all.
But all that changes when he meets Faith – the owner of the
local trendy coffee shop. Faith makes him want to risk a relationship again and
he eventually decides to take that risk.
He’s just beginning to think things might be looking up when his business
partner Matt finally arrives from Austria where he’s been trying to ‘tie up
some loose ends’.
Matt's arrival causes trouble when Zane discovers Matt and Faith already know each other – in fact many years ago they used to know each other pretty well. Matt was Faith’s first love.

Can he handle Faith and Matt having a history? Jealousy and insecurity make for an explosive cocktail which Zane is trying his best to keep under control.
There are several reason why he has relationship issues and, confusingly for Faith, he's not ready yet to share those reasons with her, which leads her to think Zane’s behaving very oddly indeed…

What is the main conflict?
What messes up his life?
Ah, those are the secrets Zane is keeping very much to
himself!
He does eventually reveal the
truths to Faith but a lot of water has flowed pretty fast under the metaphorical bridge
before they are able to reach that stage…
What is the personal
goal of the character?
Zane wants – needs – to make the Carrdale Outdoor Extreme
Sports Centre the best in the UK. After all he’s sunk every penny he has into
the place and also has business loans which make him break out in a cold sweat –
it should be all about work from here on but the past, combined with unexpected
new love interest Faith and the behaviour of his friend and business partner
Matt are screwing with his head and he’s struggling to stay focused on that particular
goal!
Is there a working
title for this novel, and when can we expect the book to be published?
The book was published by Crooked Cat in February of this
year and it’s called If You Only Knew. There’s more information on the book
below.
Is the past about to destroy the future for Faith when she discovers her new boyfriend and her first love are in business together?
5 Star Reviews -
“ I found
the story to be very real... it wasn't a typical 'happy-go-lucky cliche,
everything is perfect' type of love story. The characters are all really like-able, authentic characters. They face real problems in their lives which as
a reader you can relate to.”
A Novel
Thought
Faith owns The Coffee Pot in the outdoor adventure sports
mecca of Derbyshire’s Peak District. She hasn’t had a man in her life for a
while, as she has been too busy serving cakes to weary rock climbers and
mountain bikers to find time for the complications of a relationship with the
male of the species.
Then Zane and Matt arrive on the scene as the new owners of
the Carrdale Adventure Sports Centre.
Dating Zane, she soon discovers he’s not the Mr Perfect she
thought he was; and why is he so reluctant to talk about his past?
As for Matt – well, to Faith he isn’t Matt at all because he
was a completely different person when he broke her heart all those years ago.
With her new boyfriend and her first love running Carrdale
as business partners – Matt out to cause trouble and Zane keeping secrets –
Faith struggles to keep the peace between them whilst trying to figure out how
she feels about the two men in her life…
If You Only Knew is available in paperback and ebook versions now.
